Japanese emperor and empress thank Herts fire chief

THE chief fire officer for the county was presented to the Emperor and Empress of Japan on Thursday in recognition of work carried out after the earthquake that rocked the country last year.

Roy Wilsher led the UK international search and rescue team in Japan searching for earthquake survivors following the 2011 incident

Mr Wilsher was presented to the Japanese figureheads at a special ceremony at the Japanese Embassy held to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

He said: “To be invited to this event is a great honour for me and for Hertfordshire.

“I am extremely proud of the rescue teams and the work we accomplished in helping Japan and its people recover from this disaster.

“To receive the thanks of the Emperor and Empress on behalf of the country’s people is very touching.”
