Jamie, 10, prepares for ukulele festival

Waiting for Video...

THE youngest solo performer at the first ukulele festival of its kind has spoken to the Gazette about how he learned to play.

Jamie Brener, 10, of Dellfield Close, Berkhamsted, taught Gazette reporter David O’Neill how to play Iko Iko by The Dixie Cups on the four-stringed instrument.

Jamie, who only began playing in August, said: “The point of the ukulele is not to play it really good or be famous – it’s all about having fun.”

He was inspired to give it a go after hearing a performance by the British Ukulele Orchestra at the BBC Proms.

He said: “I just loved the sound they made. The ukulele fits in with any kind of music – rock, classical, everything. You can go very loud, very quiet or right in the middle.

“You can play high or low, and go really angry or really gentle depending on how hard you strum.”

Jamie will perform at the first Ukes for Unicef festival at Berkhamsted Civic Centre between 11.30am and 5.30pm on Saturday, March 3. Tickets are £5 and profits will go to the children’s rights charity.

And as for David’s playing? Jamie described it as “excellent”.
