CHILDREN from schools across Berkhamsted took part in the town’s own mini-Olympic games.

The Berkhamsted Games included an opening ceremony with headteachers from the town’s ten schools carrying the torch before the main Olympic flame was lit by Bridgewater School headteacher Rachel Swaffield.

Every child from Berkhamsted’s schools took part in at least one sporting event on Thursday and a 15,000-strong crowd turned out to watch.

The event, which was the first of its kind, was organised by a committee chaired by Olympian Louise Collins, a 200 metre runner, who competed in the 1988 games at Seoul.

Cross country skier Captain John Moore OBE who competed in the 1956 games presented medals to young winners. He was joined at the schools event by canoeist Sylvia Lunn and triathlete Sian Brice.

Cindy Withey, who is part of the organising committee, said: I don’t think there has ever been a time when all 10 schools have come together for an event like this. It was truly amazing.”

The closing ceremony saw youngsters sing Gary Barlow’s hit Sing, which was created to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.
