Hundreds caught out in licence crackdown

A crackdown on TV licence dodgers saw more than 300 people in Hemel Hempstead caught out last year.

The figure reflects the average evasion rate of around five per cent. More than 500 people in Watford and 200 in St Albans had also evaded the fee.

TV Licensing spokesman Victoria Sykes said: “To be fair to the law-abiding majority, we’ll continue to pursue the small minority of people who do not pay.”

The maximum fine for not paying for a licence is £1,000.
