Gazette unlocks box of happy memories

Fifty years ago Olive Langford, from Boxmoor, stood wide-eyed as deliverymen brought a cocktail cabinet to her house that her husband Ken had won on the popular TV quiz show Take Your Pick.

Half a century later, and Olive was once again surprised by the cabinet, which still sits in her lounge, as it popped up in The Gazette in our Look Back section on April 23.

Ken, who has since sadly passed away, went along to the show's filming with some work colleagues.

He ended up being selected from the audience and went on to win the cabinet. His son Graham said: "The family had joked earlier not to take the money and 'open the box', but never thought he would actually participate.

"The show was recorded a week before going out, and on returning home my mother wouldn't believe that he had appeared on the show!

"The Gazette was there to photograph my father, with the cabinet, when being delivered.

"The article on the cabinet has been incredibly well read, and my mother has been inundated with calls, largely because my father was so well-known and respected.

"My mother thanks The Gazette for the memories."
