Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre’s jumbo donation cools down Whipsnade Zoo

Asian elephants feeling the heat at nearby Whipsnade Zoo have been given the chance to cool off, thanks to the Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre.

The idea was popular with the pachyderms, who enjoyed rolling around in the jumbo delivery of 200 tonnes of snow transported from the indoor ski centre on Albans Hill.

Elephant trainer at the zoo Katie Webster said: “It is a form of enrichment for them, it is just something different. Usually they would cool themselves off with water or use sand for dusting with but they have had nice, cold snow today.”

“We like to make sure we’re using lots of novel ideas with the elephants here to keep them entertained.”

The project forms part of the Snow Centre’s Beat the Heat campaign of summer activities.
