A woman with 30 years’ experience serving up school dinners to hungry pupils has lots of reasons to celebrate.

The Hemel Hempstead School’s Sue Hoare was surprised during the lunchtime service last Wednesday with a bouquet of flowers. Not only was it her 60th birthday, but the dedicated dinner lady had just been named catering assistant of the year in the ‘Unsung Heroes’ catering staff awards.

Assistant headteacher Norma Darby, who nominated her, said: “Sue is loved and known by hundreds of staff, students and parents – many of whom she knows from days they attended the school. She is the ‘surrogate granny’ for many of the students.”

Sue said: “I always appreciate the support I get from the school and I love working with all the children. They keep me cheerful.”
