Hemel gets a spruce up ahead of the Olympic torch relay

WORK to spruce up Hemel Hempstead’s town centre ahead of the Olympic torch relay has begun.

Staff from Dacorum Borough Council’s Clean, Safe and Green team have been getting hands-on this week planting dozens of shrubs and flowers along Marlowes.

It is part of work to ‘dress the Olympic torch relay route’ but council chiefs say are also using it as an opportunity to carry out general maintenance.

In total it is costing £8,000, which includes plants, matting, mulch and labour. Of this, £7,000 from the council budget has been set aside for the torch relay and £1,000 has come from the annual maintenance pot.

The plants - almost 1,000 of them in total which are in the Olympic colours of blue, yellow, black, green and red - are permanent evergreen shrubs as well as various seasonal flowers.

The Olympic torch will be carried through Hemel Hempstead from Bartel Close round to Woodhall Lane on Sunday, July 8, between 4.30pm and 6pm.
