PATIENTS in Dacorum who are obese will not be able to have routine operations until they have lost weight under new rules.

People with a BMI of 35 or more will be denied non emergency procedures under the policy by Herts Primary Care Trust, which came into force on January 1.

At the same time smokers will be told to see a quitting advisor before they can have an operation.

Health chiefs say obese people are more at risk of complications following surgery and are more likely to die under anaesthetic.
