Get involved to help mark radio milestone

A community radio station will be celebrating its first birthday by broadcasting from a shopping centre and inviting the public to get involved.

Radio Dacorum reaches the milestone on Friday, March 1 and it will be moving from its Grovehill base into an empty shop unit at Marlowes Shopping Centre in Hemel Hempstead town centre for three days from next Thursday.

There will be live performances and visitors will be invited in and given free tickets to a prize draw.

Radio Dacorum – online at www.radiodacorum.org.uk – was launched after local station Hemel FM suddenly closed and is run by volunteer station manager Matt Hatton, who trains up newcomers.

Loretta Anderson of Community Action Dacorum, which oversees, the station’s activities, said: “We have people from all walks of life and from all over the borough.

“We find every time a new show is added the numbers go up. The challenge will be to get people not to just tune in for the thing they like but to tune in generally, but I think that will come.”

The station welcomes new volunteers and would particularly like to fill Sunday slots. Loretta said: “It is a really unusual and fun way to volunteer.” There are also opportunities for presenters who may not want to commit to a regular slot but can fill in from time to time.
