Geoff Cox’s guide to the new DVD releases: The Muppets, J. Edgar, Man On A Ledge

A CLEVER but troubled boy is devastated by his father’s death in the World Trade Centre attacks in EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE (12: Warner).

The film is an adaptation of a best-selling novel and tackled in an extremely earnest way by British director Stephen Daldry, whose previous work includes Billy Elliot and The Hours.

In the aftermath of 9/11, we follow Oskar (Thomas Horn), a nine-year-old New Yorker who may have Asperger’s, as he goes to obsessive lengths to comprehend the death of his father (Tom Hanks) in the atrocity.

He discovers a mysterious key among his dad’s possessions and becomes obsessed with discovering what it opens. This fixation leads him on a remarkable journey around the Big Apple.
