Fundraisers in line for awards

A dad whose poorly new-born daughter was cared for by a children’s hospice and a brave youngster whose brother was helped by nurses there have been nominated for community awards.

Danny Kerr, along with partner Sam, of Northend, Hemel Hempstead, have raised more than £10,000 for Keech Hospice Care since their baby Lexi passed away.

And 12-year-old Rachel Gower bravely stepped in to carry the Olympic torch through Hemel Hempstead after her brother passed away from cancer before the historic relay reached the town.

Danny, 27, has been shortlisted for the Best Fundraiser category and Rachel is in the running for the Courageous Child title in the Luton’s Best awards.

The pair will find out if they’ve won during a glitzy awards ceremony at Luton Hoo on November 29.

Keech Hospice spokesman Andie Hill, who put forward the nominations, said: “We just wanted to show how much we appreciate it.”

Danny and Sam have raked in cash for the cause by hosting a fun day and quiz night and Danny recently gave a speech at a Keech dinner, which raised £35,000.

Meanwhile, Rachel, of Robbs Close, Hemel Hempstead, whose brother Gregory benefitted from being visited at home by Keech nurses, went to the Luton-based hospice to let sick little ones get to grips with her Olympic torch.

Andie said: “The pair of them have done so much work, campaigning and publicity so it has helped raise the hospice profile.”
