A BOROUGH-wide festival dedicated to arts, heritage, sport and leisure to celebrate the Olympic Games has been launched.
Having fun is the message at the centre of the Dacorum Cultural Olympiad project, which will see some 26 events being held between now and December 2012.
The programme is designed to benefit the whole community and has been hailed by organisers as the most comprehensive cultural festival ever seen in area.
The project has been formed under the banner of the Dacorum Partnership, which is made up of Dacorum Borough Council, Herts County Council and other partners, including charities and business representatives.
With athletes from 240 countries taking part in the London Olympics, the borough council has funded a committee to get residents involved in sport and other cultural activities.
Dacorum Partnership development officer Nicky Flynn said: “It is about increasing participation, raising awareness and giving the community something to focus on in terms of getting excited about the 2012 games.”
A programme of funded and part-funded events is planned and it is hoped that people will continue to use the new skills they learn through the project, such as enjoying a new sport, once the scheme comes to an end.
The Dacorum Cultural Olympiad was officially launched at Hemel Hempstead School on Thursday where guests included those involved in planned events, members of the organising committee and Mayor of Dacorum Roger Taylor.
The first event where people will be able to find out more about the Cultural Olympiad will be this Sunday’s Spirit of Dacorum event – a historic vehicle tour around the borough followed by a public car display in Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead.
