Friends plan fundraiser for footballing stalwart

Friends have organised a benefit in memory of popular man Martin Hill.

The bash will take place on what would have been Mr Hill's 50th birthday in April to raise cash for his family.

Mr Hill - who was well known in the local football community - was diagnosed with aggressive kidney cancer last August and died just 12 weeks later.

He leaves his wife Lorna and teenage children Adam and Emily.

Paul Dove, who was his childhood friend and best man at his wedding, said: "He had never been off sick. He got a pain in his side and it was cancer in three places.

"I want to raise as much as I can for him."

Mr Hill grew up on the Manor Estate in Apsley and lived all his life in Hemel Hempstead, going to Two Waters and Bourne Valley schools.

He spent his entire working life at the British Standards Institute in Maylands Avenue, starting at the age of 16.

The Tottenham Hotspur supporter, who lived in Tamar Green, was also heavily involved in local football and over the years he assisted and managed several teams.

"Martin was a very social man, who was loved by many people, due to his infectious happy personality, as he was always keen to help others before himself," Mr Dove said.

"It has been a very sad time for everybody who knew Martin, so this event will provide us with an opportunity to toast Martin and to celebrate his life.

"Martin was an extremely popular man and the event will be an opportunity to help raise money for his children via his good and long term friends."

The event will include food, drink, a disco, an auction and a raffle.

It takes place at the rugby club in Pennine Way, Hemel Hempstead, on Saturday, April 17.

For tickets, which cost 10, contact Mr Dove at dovedecorations@btinternet.com or phone 07901 691372.
