Tributes have been made to top sports correspondent Brian Woolnough who lost his fight to bowel cancer today, aged 63.

Known as Wooly, the big-hitter of the sports-writing world previously worked on the sports desk at the Evening Post in Hemel Hempstead before later working at the Sun Newspaper for 27 years.

Recently he held the post of chief sports writer at the Daily Star and hosted Sky Sports’ Sunday Supplement program.

Nick Jones from Boxmoor is currently a senior subeditor at the Sun’s sports desk.

He said: “Sadly I never worked at the Sun at the same time as Wooly, but he was well-known by everyone in the industry.

“All his former colleagues here say he was good fun and well-liked...a legendary character.”
