Farmer hopes ancient papers could stop New Mill plans

A farmer who claims his family bequeathed a social centre to the community has spoken out about his disappointment that it has been taken away by the church.

David Mead believes his great great grandfather Thomas Mead, who was a wealthy landowner, left New Mill Social Centre in Tring to the people of New Mill.

The Tring Team Parish has closed and fenced it off and is planning on pulling it down to make way for a development that will include a home for a chaplain for Tring School.

The people who used it have opposed the plans since they were told last year and say it will tear the heart from the community.

Mr Mead said: “I don’t think they have been treated fairly at all and I wish I had the paperwork to prove my ancestors gave the centre to the people.”

Tring Team Parish say that the land is there’s to sell because the church paid the Meads the money for it and has the documents to prove it.

Rev Jane Banister said: “It’s very clear that the land does belong to the church. It was paid for by the church community.”
