Traders asked to pay so loos can open longer

TWO householders say a town’s toilets need drastic improvement.

Carole and Wally Dunn of Curlew Close, Berkhamsted, wrote to their town council to say so.

Berkhamsted’s Chamber of Commerce plans to pay for and install brown tourist signs before the 2012 Olympics to attract more visitors to the town. Its shops and markets are among the attractions.

But the toilet block and sinks at Water Lane car park’s toilets are closed on Sundays and bank holidays – though men’s outdoor urinals remain open.

Now town councillors agreed to ask the Berkhamsted Market Fund or Chamber of Commerce to pay for the facilities to be open for longer. Councillor Tom Ritchie said: “They are not the best advertisement for the town when open, but they are an even worse advertisement when closed.”
