THIS year’s Gifted and Talented Maths Challenge had it first all-female team - and they won.

The event has been organised by Westfield First School and Nursery in Durrants Lane, Berkhamsted, for the past three years.

The brightest four six- to seven-year-old mathematicians from first schools across the town and surrounding villages take part in the morning event, which was on Tuesday last week this year.

Youngsters took part in challenges involving dominoes, money and making their own measuring sticks.

School maths coordinator Suzanne Stace said: “Not only did they develop their maths skills, but they enjoyed the challenges, worked well as a team and left full of excitement and very proud of themselves.”

This year, the winners were from Swing Gate First and Nursery School in Berkhamsted, and they were all girls. Greenway First and Nursery School, of Crossways, Berkhamsted, came second and St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, of Greenway, Berkhamsted, came third.
