AN AWARD-WINNING teaching assistant is encouraging children to walk to their school.
Vicki Lewis, who has led the travel forum in her workplace for three years, has won gold in the 2011 School Travel Awards.
She’s the only person in Herts to have won the accolade, which was also given Berkhamsted’s Westfield First School where she is based.
Mrs Lewis said: “It is a safer environment for the children to get to the school and less congested for people on the roads outside. That’s got to be a good thing. We are an eco school and this is good for the environment.”
She has organised a walking bus for schoolchildren on Fridays, competitions for them to design road safety posters and visits by Buster the walking bus dinosaur.
Children that walk to school a lot can get rewards ranging from hot chocolate drinks to a pencil, thanks to Mrs Lewis.
She also organises bi-annual Walk to School Weeks, where children can also use scooters, one of which was two weeks ago.
The most recent week ended in a free ‘walk it, bike it’ breakfast for children, including yoghurt, fruit, croissants and fruit juice.
