Double delight over bridges
Villagers are doubly delighted after progress over the upkeep of two popular bridges.
Dixon's Gap bridge on Wingrave Road, Tring, has been repaired, while 12,000 is expected to be provided by Herts County Council to help British Waterways maintain a footbridge near Tring Road, Wilstone.
It was originally feared the temporarily-closed footbridge – which has been at the canal since it was first built – would close permanently, but repairs will give it a new look.
Colin Moore, 69, of Tring Road, Wilstone, said the footbridge is "popular".
"It is widely used by walkers, particularly dog walkers," he said.
"I spend quite a lot of time down by the canal and there is always people going across there."
Mr Moore, a former worker at Kodak in Hemel Hempstead, said: "It had got very unsafe and some of the steps were a bit uncertain."
Villagers are also pleased with repairs to Dixon's Gap Bridge, which featured in The Gazette in January when Tring Rural Parish councillor Peter Foster said its closure was forcing more traffic through Wilstone.
Another villager said Herts Highways have done a good job of repairing
the bridge.
Phil Buschi, 59, of Tring Road, Wilstone, said: "They have been quick about it considering how the weather has been and it was repaired within two months of the damage.
"They had to postpone the work because of the very bad weather because they had to use traditional materials including lime mortar."
