‘Don’t take it out on staff’

A campaign group is ‘appalled’ by the latest round of money saving tactics being implemented by hospital bosses.

Dacorum Hospital Action Group chairman Betty Harris has spoken out against plans to introduce parking fees for disabled motorists and scrap an internal transport service.

She said: “I’m quite appalled by the whole idea, it is just so unfair.”

West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Hemel Hempstead’s Urgent Care Centre and Watford General and St Albans City hospitals, is axing the service that ferries staff and patients between hospital sites, to save £449,000 each year.

Betty said: “They are strapped for cash but I don’t think it is fair to take it out on the staff.”

She said the hospital bus took around 15 to 20 minutes to get from Watford to Hemel Hempstead, a journey that would take around an hour on public transport.

The trust is also introducing car park charges for Blue Badge motorists, who currently park for free.

From April 1 they will have to pay the same as other patients and visitors.

Betty said: “I’m horrified.”

The campaigner regularly attends trust meetings where she makes the group’s views known.
