Dog walker finds dumped pet

A gerbil suffering with a large tumour was heartlessly dumped.

The pet was found abandoned in a washing powder box in Long Marston, near Tring.

It was discovered by a dog walker on playing fields close to the village hall on Monday, August 9.

The washing powder box had been well-hidden in a hedge and the male gerbil was found inside with some bedding.

It was taken to a nearby vets but had to be put to sleep when it was discovered the animal had a large abdominal tumour.

Animal welfare officer Julie Britnell said: "It is always so heart-breaking when we find an animal has just been dumped like a piece of rubbish, especially when they are ill or suffering.

"All we can think is that someone has had this gerbil and as soon as it has become poorly they have just dumped it, rather than looking to get veterinary help ."

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
