Director puts a new twist on team charity challenge

A company director hopes to be back in training soon for a charity's tough challenge after twisting his ankle on a village run.

Dr Grant Coren, 46, of Sheethanger Lane, Felden, jokes that 'absolute stupidity' was the reason for him agreeing to join the Great Escape Challenge for Marie Curie Cancer Care in May.

"I came back from a run around the village golf course with a swollen ankle and now I'm on crutches," said Dr Coren, who is director of life science at executive recruitment firm Astralis, in St Albans. "It was my first attempt to get fit!"

Dr Coren and three of his work colleagues will be taking part in a 10km run, a 35km cycle ride, kayaking and 10 mystery team challenges in the Brecon Beacons in May.

Dr Coren added: "My little girl, Pira, asks me every day if I am still going to do it as she looks at me hobbling on my crutches and my wife, Sarah, still thinks that I am insane and potentially going to die! She keeps asking about life insurance and things!"

But he is determined to complete challenges and raise loads of cash for the cause. He's a committed Chelsea fan and the challenge clashes with the Champions League final.

The team has raised more than 3,300 for the drive to provide free nursing to patients with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes.
