A PUB landlord has appealed the crook who is sitting pretty after pinching one of his chairs to return it.

The thief was caught on CCTV creeping out of The George and Dragon in High Street, Northchurch, at 12.04am on Sunday, while the barmaid’s back was turned.

Mick Owens, 62, said: “I have had all sorts of things stolen from my pub – pint glasses get nicked regularly.

“But what possesses someone to leave with a chair and walk down the High Street with it? I was staggered, to be honest – I just couldn’t believe it.”

He said the thief was part of a group of five or six having farewell drinks for someone who was going to Australia.

Only three women stayed until the pub closed, when the crime took place.

Mick said: “They had been at the pub for quite a long time and had a fair bit to drink. I would like to put it down as alcohol-driven, not that that’s any excuse.

“It would have been nice if the following morning they had thought: ‘Oh God, how stupid. Let’s sneak back in the middle of the night and return it.’

“If we can shame them into bringing it back and an apology, then nothing else is going to happen.”

He said the chair was part of an antique set of four, worth about £300.

Mick had been out until 15 minutes after his pub closed that night and only noticed the missing chair after that.

He has called the police, but CCTV footage of the thief is unclear.
