DEMOLITION has begun on the former Royal Mail site in Hemel Hempstead despite calls to save it.

On Wednesday a digger moved onto the Park Lane site and began tearing down buildings, even though The Twentieth Century Society says it is of ‘special architectural interest’ and should be preserved.

The society is calling on planning chiefs at Dacorum Borough Council to step in and stop the site being turned into 85 homes by housing association Hightown.

The depot was likened by architect John Winter to ‘a giant caterpillar crawling up the hill or, seen from the top, an early reptile with a long neck and drooping head’.
