Dad jailed following axe/sword attack

A dad who helped ambush a man who was attacked with an axe or sword has been jailed.

Adam Carmichael, of Berkhamsted, lured the brother of his former lover to the car park at The Bell in Tring, to attack him on November 19 2008.

The weapon was never recovered but on Monday the father-of-two was jailed 30 months at St Albans Crown Court, having been convicted earlier of wounding John Fisher.

Mr Fisher didn't know was that he was being set up to be attacked outside the busy pub.

As Mr Carmichael kept him talking another man emerged and assaulted him, badly cutting his left forearm with the weapon.

Judge Marie Catterson heard the background to the assault was an on going dispute Carmichael, who was 26 at the time, had with a former partner who was the sister of Mr Fisher.

Carmichael was upset over the problems he was having seeing their son and as a result he set up a meeting with the brother.

The court heard Carmichael had arranged for Dean Spencer to carry out the assault, but hadn't anticipated the severity of the injuries that would result.

Colin Banham prosecuting said the weapon used was an axe or a sword.

As it came down on Mr Fisher's left forearm it caused severe damage to three muscles and part of a bone had to be removed.

The court heard Mr Fisher has made a full recovery.

Miss Nichola Cafferkey defending said Carmichael had become a dad for the second time last week and was now genuinely regretful and remorseful for what had happened.

Passing sentence Judge Marie Catterson told Carmichael he had lured Mr Fisher to the car park.

She said the victim was to tell police later that it felt like his "left fore arm was being chopped off."

The judge, who described the attack as an ambush, told Carmichael: "He was lured by you to where the attack took place and you kept him talking allowing your co-defendant to emerge and attack him."

She jailed him for 30 months telling him: "This offence and your part in it is far too serious to be met with anything other that a sentence of immediate custody."

Spencer is to be sentenced for his part in the attack in two weeks.
