Dad fights on for speed humps on danger road
A dad is still campaigning for road safety measures two years after a car smashed through his garden wall.
Richard Mills, 41, says a tight bend in the road on Tile Kiln Lane is an accident hotspot.
The dad of four has appealed to Herts Highways to slow down passing
traffic by installing speed humps.
He said: "We want to protect children in this area and have tried campaigning and sending letters in the past, but all we get from Highways is that 'it's not a priority'.
"We've had so many near misses around here, I don't see how that can be right.
"I don't want to have to see a death here before action is taken."
The Gazette first reported Mr Mills' concerns in July 2008, after a car smashed through the wall in front of his home.
He was spurred into action again last month when a six-year-old was hit by a car in nearby Rant Meadow on February 20.
Mr Mills said: "It was horrible to hear a little girl had been hurt and it sends shivers through me to think about the danger my children face.
"Two street lamps have been replaced after cars crashed into them. I also had to pull my two-year-old out of the path of a cab after the driver mounted the pavement."
He added: "It's a small road with a tight bend but that doesn't stop any boy racer, or people rushing home from work or from the school run, speeding around it."
Herts County Council said the road had been assessed and was currently not considered a high priority compared to other places in the town.
Spokesman John Camp said: "It is not considered a hazardous site in terms of road safety, although we appreciate that any accident is distressing for those involved."
He added that the list of priority areas is reviewed annually.
