SUPERMARKET raiders jumped into their getaway car to escape police when they were disturbed during a supermarket raid.

And now police are hoping witnesses can point them in the right direction after losing track of the fleeing motor.

Police pulled up outside the Waitrose supermarket in Berkhamsted at 3.10am on Friday morning after an alarm was triggered.

Thieves had broken into the store through the front entrance and were in the process of trying to smash their way into the cigarette counter when the police arrived.

They fled to the nearby High Street, and got in what is believed to have been a dark coloured Audi.

The police gave chase as the car set off towards Tring but then lost sight of them. The car had its boot open and police hope that may prompt an early-morning witness to come forward.

It is believed that the burglars were interrupted before they could make off with any cigarettes.

Waitrose had not responded to a request for comment on the damage done to the supermarket at the time of going to press.

Anyone who may have seen anything or had any information is being asked to call the police non-emergency number on 0845 3300222.
