This is the face of 31-year-old builder James Carbott, found guilty today of the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend’s father.
Thomas Baird, 63, was beaten with a crowbar and stabbed at his bungalow in Westerdale, Hemel Hempstead on March 2 last year.
Carbott, of Epping Green in the town, was the man who committed the savage attack, a jury decided by a majority verdict.
They also returned a unanimous verdict on an arson charge after hearing how Carbott, having left the scene, later returned and poured petrol over his victim’s body and set it alight.
After the verdicts were announced Det Insp John Arthur from the Joint Major Crime Unit, who led the investigation, said: “Thomas was the victim of a horrific and sustained attack and Carbott lied in an attempt to cover his tracks.”
“I would like to pay tribute to Mr Baird’s family as they have not only lost their loved one in the most brutal way, they have had to endure a trial and relive the horrific events which took place that night.
“While the verdict will not bring Thomas back, I hope the result is of some comfort to them and that it will assist them with moving forward with their lives.”
