A FATHER and his son have been convicted by a jury after violence broke out at an 18th birthday party.

Stephen Thompson, 47, of Coleridge Close in Hemel Hempstead, was found guilty of assaulting fellow guest Russell Bird and damaging his car by smashing a window.

Thompson’s son Ashley, 19, was convicted of assaulting Mr Bird’s partner Jayme Edwards.

But the jury at St Albans Crown Court failed to reach a verdict concerning Ashley Thompson, who was also charged with assaulting Mr Bird. And they failed to reach a verdict concerning Mr Thompson senior, who also faced a charge of assaulting Miss Edwards.

Judge Stephen Warner adjourned the hearing for the prosecution to consider whether there should be a retrial of the pair on the charges outstanding.

The prosecution will also decide whether to seek a retrial against Dwaine Thompson, 23, of Chaucer Walk, who also faced assault charges but these did not proceed because of a technicality.

The party took place in a garden in Coleridge Crescent in May.
