CRIME: Burglars ransacked the clubhouse of a football team and made off with £1,300 in cash.

Thieves got into Berkhamsted Football Club’s base in Broadwater at about 4.30am on Sunday.

Steve Davis, one of its directors, said: “They broke in, cut the alarm system and ransacked the place. There were doors broken and glass was smashed. It was quite messy.”

The burglars took cash from a jukebox, fruit machine and tills, along with 2,000 CDs and bottles of spirits from the bar.

It is the first time the club has been burgled since it was set up in its present form in 2009.

Mr Davis said: “I feel angry and upset because the club is run on a voluntary basis.

“We all work hard to get what we get and all the money we do get goes back into the running of the club.”

If you have any information on the burglary, phone 101 and ask to speak to PC Jules Lees, quoting crime reference number D2/11/1049.
