On the same day that people across Dacorum stood in silent tribute to all those who gave their lives in the service of their country, friends of one young man whose life was also cut short gathered for a vigil in Hemel Hempstead town centre.

Hundreds of people gathered in response to an invitation on social networking site Facebook to set Chinese lanterns flying into the night sky as a tribute to the popular 21-year-old, who died of knife wounds in the early hours of Sunday morning.

More than 11,000 people have already paid tribute to him on a special Facebook memorial page.

Flowers and tributes have also been left at the spot where he was stabbed in Hemel Hempstead town centre on Sunday at 1.30am.

Pints of beer, Arsenal football shirts, flowers and cards have been laid around a tree, which has been nicknamed ‘Billy’s tree’ by people who knew him.

The tree was decorated with football scarves, T-shirts and balloons in preparation for the Friday night tribute.

A fund has also be set up to raise money for a mural to the popular young man and people will be able to buy tribute wrist bands that will read RIP Billy Dove, Forever In Our Hearts.

Two 17-year-old boys charged with murder will appear at St Albans Crown Court on Monday, February 6, 2012.
