THE man who helped catch two burglars by throwing his bicycle in front of their getaway car has been recognised for his bravery.

Steve Patton, 26, who works as a police community support officer (PCSO) at Berkhamsted Police Station, has been chosen as the Dacorum candidate for a PCSO Of The Year competition by Hertfordshire Police Authority.

He made the front page of The Gazette in March following his quick-acting moves, which helped to catch two thieves.

Our report described how he threw his pedal cycle in front of the burglars’ vehicle as they tried to drive out of town and escape.

He then chased their motor down the road and took the registration number, which helped his colleagues to later stop them.

In a report to Berkhamsted Town Council, the PCSO recorded other incidents he was called to.

Read about them in this week’s Gazette, on sale now. In next week’s Gazette, find out if Mr Patton beat the 10 other district nominees to become Herts-wide PCSO of the year.
