Concern for horses remaining in field

With an investigation continuing into the death of two horses in a Hemel Hempstead field, neighbours are still concerned that other animals at the same location are suffering.

The RSPCA is investigating after two horses became ill in a field off Fennycroft Road in Gadebridge last month and later perished.

Despite the continuing investigation, nearby residents have spoken to the Gazette about their concern for the remaining eight or so animals in the field, especially after a horse escaped from the field at the weekend.

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “Two PCSOs and many residents spent at least four hours trying to round up the horses. I witnessed very distressed horses, sweating and neighing.

“The remaining horses and foals are in danger and residents are having to feed them.

“There is ragwort in the field and the drinking troughs have been vandalised.

“In the meantime the surviving horses and foals are suffering.”

A spokesman said: “The RSPCA is aware of concerns which have been raised.

“An officer has been monitoring the horses and visited yesterday and no new welfare concerns were raised.

“The RSPCA is in discussions with the owner of the horses who is co-operating fully and working with the RSPCA.”

They added that no further comments can be made during the active investigation.
