Community help raise hundreds for church

A community effort helped raise hundreds of pounds to upgrade a church dating back to Norman times.

Villagers in Wigginton turned out for the annual church fair at St Bartholomews on Saturday (August 28).

There were train and pony rides for little ones at the event and a bric-a-brac stall for bargain hunters.

Among the goodies on offer were Batik tablecloths sold by curate Michael Eggleton on behalf of the Tarizo House of Hope in Zimbabwe.

To help boost funds resident Betty Oldland decided to sell her teddy bear collection and the village women's institute flogged their homemade jams.

Around 300 people turned out for the event, playing their part to raise 1,057.

Paul Richardson, from the church committee that organises the fair, said: "It brings the community together and lots of people participated within the village.

"I thought it was a very successful day and the children enjoyed the variety of activities."
