Astley Cooper School welcomed concentration camp victim Alec Ward to speak ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day.

Monday will mark national Holocaust Memorial Day, and Hemel Hempstead’s MP has added his name to the document honouring the millions who died in concentration and death camps.

Mike Penning has signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment in the House of Commons ahead of the solemn date, which this year marks the 69th anniversary of the liberation of the infamous Nazi camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Mr Penning said: “I encourage everyone to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and remember the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. The anniversary of the camp’s liberation gives us an annual opportunity to think about the past and to fight against present prejudice and intolerance.”

Earlier this week, Hemel Hempstead’s Astley Cooper School welcomed Polish-born concentration camp survivor Alec Ward to speak about his experiences of the Holocaust and being separated from his family.

Teacher Jacqui Van Loen said: “It was an honour to hear Alec speak and to meet such an inspirational man.”
