A group of fishing fanatics have set themselves the challenge of raising £20,000 needed to restock the canal.
The Tring Anglers Club – first established in 1947 – have suffered since last year’s mystery fish kill and the collapse of a lock on the Aylesbury Arm which meant it was out of bounds for nearly a year.
Chris Savage – who owns and runs Gosford Tackle on the High Street – said: “We still don’t know what caused the kill. The Environment Agency found nothing, so we can’t say it was pollution. I don’t think we’ll ever know.”
Now the club is concentrating on fundraising events to raise the £20,000 required to buy fresh stock. The last count found just five carp and a couple of bream and pike in one particular stretch.
The club has given itself until November to come up with the money. Member Chris Mayo said: “We can’t restock until then because it all depends on the water temperature and the breeding cycles. We have to be careful when transporting them because if the fish get stressed, they won’t feed.”
