MORE than £500,000 is being poured into a project to save more than 200 ancient Chilterns commons that are considered under threat.

Steps will also be taken to ensure that the landscapes – including Berkhamsted and Northchurch Commons – are preserved for future generations.

Commons project officer Rachel Sanderson said: “Berkhamsted and Northchurch Commons have been at the heart of their communities since the Middle Ages. They hold generations of history in their landscapes.

“They’re important wildlife refuges, home to many species that cannot survive elsewhere in our intensively-farmed countryside.

“They’re also fantastic green spaces used by many for walking, picnics and playing on. However, commons are under threat.

“Today, there is increasing demand for land from agriculture, housing and commerce, but ironically the biggest threat to commons is neglect.”
