East met West Herts over the weekend as more than 30 senior Chinese government officials got a taste of rural English life with a visit to Aldbury.
David Cobb, who lives in the village, organised the trip as part of his business development work at University College London. He said: “Chinese visitors to the UK tend to focus on the big cities and rarely have an opportunity to gain a first-hand insight into smaller communities.”
The group enjoyed a pub lunch and even pulled pints in the Greyhound Inn. Leader Cai Ying said: “The neighbourhood is very harmonious, not only because they are willing to volunteer to improve the environment of the village, but because they are very kind to visitors like us.” Tang Hui added: “To me, it is just the village I imagined from the novels of Jane Austen.”
