Checkout worker gets shoppers to dance to his tune
A Sainsbury’s checkout assistant has been helping shoppers stretch their pounds by stretching his vocal cords.
Andy Wigston sings about half-price salmon through the PA sustem at the Apsley Mills store to the tune of ‘Who Will Buy?’ from the musical Oliver!
Hemel Hempstead’s own ‘one pound fish man’ started his performances during the festive season five years ago and discovered that sales went up.
The former choirboy and child opera star has been entertaining at Christmas ever since and during other times of the year if the specials on offer inspire him.
Andy said: “Generally speaking when I’m singing, the store goes quiet and then when I’m finished people clap.
“It brightens up people’s day and it does sell the fish.
“In a lot of ways it’s embarrassing but at the same time it’s just part of me. I suppose I try and be modest about it.
“I do probably go beyond what is expected in terms of customer service but I’ll sing it and 15 minutes later you’ll often hear customers humming the tune, and that’s priceless.”
Andy sang with the Royal Opera, aged just 14, on its first tour of Japan and South Korea in 1979. He is now part of the all-age choir Joyful Noise and sings in church.
Andy’s colleague Emma Woolf said: “He is one of those guys that likes to make people smile and laugh and he will go out of his way to do that.
“He does it to make people happy. He’s that kind of guy.”
