THE M1 had to be closed when a car went up in flames.

Police shut the carriageway in both directions just after 4.30pm on Monday until smoke had cleared.

Firefighters from Hemel Hempstead and Garston were called to the motorway between J7 and J6 southbound where a Volkswagen Beetle was alight.

The road was fully reopened by officers at 4.55pm.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire was logged as accidental.
