Actors and actresses are invited to attend auditions for Noel Coward’s comic play Blithe Spirit this weekend.

The seven parts will require a cast ranging in age from about 25 through to young senior.

Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company will present the classic play at The Boxmoor Playhouse from October 7 to 10. Auditions take place at the Playhouse at 2pm on Sunday (May 27) and again at 7.45pm on Wednesday May 27.

The play concerns socialite and novelist Charles Condomime, who invites eccentric medium and clairvoyant Madame Arcate to his house to conduct a seance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife Elvira after the seance. She then makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles’ marriage to his second wife Ruth, who cannot see or hear the ghost.

Parts up for grabs include Charles Condomime, his second wife Ruth and their new maid Edith who is nervous and tears around at breakneck speed trying to do things right to make a good impression.

Other roles include the Condomines friend Dr George Bradman, his wife Violet Bradman, Charles’ first wife, the deceased Elvira, and of course the psychic Madame Arcati who was played by Margaret Rutherford in the 1945 film version of the play.
