Town shop site sorted for M&S Simply Food

A NEW Marks & Spencer store won’t be opening in Berkhamsted until Christmas 2013 at the earliest.
An archaeological dig will be carried out at the former mail delivery office, in High Street, before work starts next year.
The 0.9 acre site was acquired from Royal Mail Group for £2.55 million and owner Metric Property Investments will pump a further £5million in a new retail redevelopment. Some 80 per cent of the site is to be occupied by M&S on a 20-year lease for its Simply Food brand.
The owners, who were marketing the site to high quality restaurant occupiers, said talks are ongoing.
Plans for the site were given the go-ahead by six votes to five at a recent meeting of Dacorum Borough Council’s development control committee
The meeting was told a survey showed 86 per cent of people in the town were in favour of the project.
