Calendar of town events
A town not shy of the limelight, British comedy, Son of Rambow, was shot around Berkhamsted and featured students from Ashlyns School.
William the Conqueror was offered the crown of England at Berkhamsted Castle in 1066.
Classical Soprano, songwriter and dancer, Sarah Brightman, grew up in Berkhamsted with her parents and five siblings.
When the famous singer was eleven years old she attended Tring's Arts Educational School for jazz and acting.
On March 21, 1610 several Berkhamsted residents appeared before the Justice of Peace and swore dispositions against Margery Raye for the
crime of witchcraft.
Peter Pan author, James Barrie, was inspired to write the children's favourite when he used to stay with the Llewellyn-Davies family,
who lived in a house where The Rex cinema now stands.
The offices of Claire Lloyd Properties, on the High Street, houses the oldest timberframed building in England which dates back to 1267.
Throughout its history,Berkhamsted received several royal charters. In 1216 Henry III freed the men and merchants of the town from all taxes and all tolls wherever they went in England. In 1477 Edward IV directed that no market was to be set up within 11 miles of Berkhamsted.
Since the Berkhamsted Music Society was founded in 1954, may famous classical musicians have visited the town such as Lesley Garrat, Ian Partridge, Cecil Aronowitz and Radoslave Kvapil to name but a few!
The town has also been home to many other famous faces. The novelist Graham Greene, poet William Cooper and actor John Cleese are just a few.

The Berkhamsted Half-Marathon
and Five Mile Fun Run
This well attended event is arranged annually by
the two Rotary Clubs of Berkhamsted and lures
hundreds of runners to take the pretty route
through the Chilterns countryside.

Annual Town Meeting
The Annual Town Meeting, held in the Civic Centre
main hall, gives residents a chance to find out how
their councillors are working for them and put their
questions to them directly.

MAY
Pepper and Eastwood's Celebrity Cooking Event
Top celebrity chefs make their way to Berkhamsted
for this charity fundraiser that sees Hertfordshire's
favourite butcher entertain hundreds of foodies.
The Eastwood's team and their celebrity chef pals
join forces for the day of cooking and conversation.

Oxfam Children's Event
The Civic Centre hosts this hugely popular biannual
event when donated toys, books and clothes are all
on offer to shoppers. Be sure to get in quick, most
items are snapped up in a matter of hours.
JUNE
Walk with the Stars
Hundreds of like-minded women brave the cold
and dark for this emotional 13 mile walk in aid of
the Hospice of St Francis. In 2008, the ladies taking
part raised a record breaking 185,000 and the
charity intends to perform even better in 2009.

JULY
Pepper Summer Show
This well established music show is a firm favourite
in the Berkhamsted events calendar. It has run for
more than 20 years and in that time raised more
than 1million for the Pepper Children's Nursing
Team that cares for children with terminal and lifelimiting
illnesses.

Lion's Fte
Berkhamsted Lions never disappoint the thousands
of revellers who descend on the group's annual
Summer Fte for entertainment and charity stalls.

Pepper Golf Day
This year will mark the 12th annual golf day in aid
of the Pepper Foundation. The day-long event
raises tens of thousands of pounds for the charity.

Bike 'n' Hike
This sponsored event sees Berkhamsted walkers
and cyclists hit the road for a tour of the area's
churches and chapels to raise money for their
upkeep, courtesy of the Bedfordshire and
Hertfordshire Historic Churches Trust.

Graham Greene Festival
The work of the town's
most famous export,
literary giant Graham
Greene, is celebrated at a
series of events held in his
name.
Lectures, screenings and

NOVEMBER
Berkhamsted Firework Display
There's fun for all the family at this annual
fireworks extravaganza, usually staged at
Berkhamsted Cricket Club. Expect top music and
thousands of pounds worth of fireworks.
Festival of Lights
The one not to be missed! Berkhamsted's annual
Christmas celebration sees the town's festive lights
officially switched on. There's also entertainment
for children, charity stalls, carol singing and a visit
from Father Christmas.
