William the Conqueror was offered the crown of England at Berkhamsted Castle in 1066.

Classical Soprano, songwriter and dancer, Sarah Brightman, grew up in Berkhamsted with her parents and five siblings.

When the famous singer was eleven years old she attended Tring's Arts Educational School for jazz and acting.

crime of witchcraft.

Peter Pan author, James Barrie, was inspired to write the children's favourite when he used to stay with the Llewellyn-Davies family,

who lived in a house where The Rex cinema now stands.

The offices of Claire Lloyd Properties, on the High Street, houses the oldest timberframed building in England which dates back to 1267.

Throughout its history,Berkhamsted received several royal charters. In 1216 Henry III freed the men and merchants of the town from all taxes and all tolls wherever they went in England. In 1477 Edward IV directed that no market was to be set up within 11 miles of Berkhamsted.
