Berkhamsted’s new Marks & Spencer Simply Food store opened its doors to the general public for the first time today.

The 10,000-square-foot High Street outlet is stocking almost 4,500 food and drinks lines, including those from the Summer of Flavour range.

The spacious, modern store provides a new food shopping experience for customers.

There is an in-store bakery and a 50-seat M&S cafe, as well as Shop Your Way and Food to Order services. A selection of fresh flowers and stylish greeting cards are also available in store.

Store manager Grahame Wilson, said: “It’s great to finally welcome customers into the new store and show them what we have been working on for the past few months.

“The feedback we have received from customers today has been fantastic, particularly on the range of products available and the look and feel of the new store.

“We believe the new store brings the best in quality and fresh food to shoppers in Berkhamsted and we look forward to welcoming customers into the store over the weeks and months to come.”

M&S has taken out a 20-year lease on its new home, where Berkhamsted’s Royal Mail sorting office used to be based.

It was converted into a retail complex by new owner Metric Property at an estimated cost of £5m after the development firm bought the site in 2012.

The company faced many challenges before today’s M&S opening, including the initial opposition of Berkhamsted Town Council and the discovery of 210 skeletons beneath the complex

But after winning over planning chiefs and finding a new home for the skeletons, the future looks bright for Berkhamsted’s first M&S Simply Food store.
