CALLS for the Paralympic torch to come to Hertfordshire have been supported by a Paralympic athlete living in Tring.
Martine Wright, who was injured in the 2005 London bombings, would like to see a campaign by MEP Richard Howitt go one step further and bring the torch to Dacorum.
“I would love to see the torch come to where I live,” she said.
“I am definitely a supporter of this campaign.”
Martine, who moved to Tring in 2008, will represent Great Britain at sitting volleyball during the 2012 Olympic Games.
She was the most severely injured surviving victim of the bombings, losing both her legs in an explosion.
A campaign to bring the torch to the county was launched by Mr Howitt after it was announced that just three counties would miss out on the torch’s route, including Hertfordshire.
He said: “The Paralympic Torch Relay will also be a signature event so I urge everyone to join me in lobbying Seb Coe to ensure the Paralympic torch also visits some of our iconic destinations and attractions.”
Dacorum Borough Council is in favour of supporting the move but is considering any financial implications before fully backing any campaign.
