Berkhamsted village green plan opposed despite new homes fears

Plans to register a school’s playing field as a village green to stop new homes from being on it have been opposed by politicians.

Members of Northchurch Parish Council said the Egerton Rothesay School site between Durrants Lane and Shootersway, Berkhamsted, had been earmarked for development for 20 years.

Taylor Wimpey wants to build 180 new homes there and on an adjacent field. The plan has been included in Dacorum Borough Council’s draft core strategy for home-building until 2031.

The Gazette previously reported that Save Your Berkhamsted Residents Association applied for the site to be given village green status to try and stop the plans.

But after its Monday meeting, parish council chairman Alan Fantham said: “We thought the enterprise was too little, too late.”

But he raised concerns about the homes scheme including that the school could lose a playing field if plans are not clearly marked.

Taylor Wimpey, however, say they will give the school a larger, better playing field in exchange for its current one.
