No drugs in my pub says landlord

A pub landlord has rubbished claims people take drugs in his pub.

After claims drugs are easily accessible in pubs and bars in Berkhamsted by a former cocaine addict, one landlord has hit out.

20-year-old Callum, whose name was changed to protect his identity, told The Gazette last week how easy it was to get hold of drugs in the town, and pointed to pubs as one of the places to get them, unbeknown to the pub owners.

However, landlord Garry Clements, who owns The Goat on Berkhamsted High Street, said he operates a zero tolerance policy and has done since he bought the pub five years ago.

Mr Clements, who is currently giving The Goat a 100,000 make-over, said: "I have worked hard to shake off the bad reputation the pub used to have. When I bought it, it was on its knees and I don't want to be tarnished with the same brush as other places where it may happen.

"There is a drugs problem in the town and in this country, but it's not going on in my pub. I am so vigilant and don't want those sort of people round here."

Mr Clements, who has 30 years of experience in the hotel industry across the globe from Belize to the Caribbean, said he knows how to spot the signs and if drugs are even mentioned by a customer they will be asked to leave.

"If you sit on a aeroplane and you mention bombs you will be taken off- if you even mention drugs in my pub you will be told to leave. I want a quality place. I have lost business getting rid of the alcoholics and drug takers," he added.
