Merry meerkats bag shop prize

A merry clan of meerkats helped a shop win Berkhamsted's best-dressed window competition for the second year running.

The winning shop Lisa Kay, which sells shoes, entered into the festive spirit by dressing more than 30 of the furry characters in Christmas hats, boots and fashion accessories.

They can be spotted popping in and out of moccasins, sheepskin boots and Lisa Kay's collections of party shoes and matching bags.

Lisa Kay said: "We just wanted to do something fun for this year's window and meerkats are so lovable and on-trend at the moment.

"And there's good news for meerkat fans out there - these gorgeous soft toys are not just for decoration – they're for sale too."

Judges from the competition, organised by Berkhamsted Citizens Association (BCA), looked at businesses in the High Street and on Lower Kings Road.

BCA chairman Tony Statham presented the winners with a cup and runner-ups with certificates at the Berkhamsted Festival of Lights yesterday (December 6).

BCA vice-chairman Susan Johnson said: "The judges felt the standard of window displays was, as ever, generally extremely good and some new entrants this year made the choice difficult.

"The overall winners, for a second year in a row, were Lisa Kay of High Street. Their witty and inventive display of Christmas meerkats brought a smile to everyone's faces, as well as displaying their goods to the best advantage."

Last year the shop displayed polar bears and will maintain its meerkat theme in the summer by dressing them up in hawaiian shirts and ra-ra skirts.
