A SUNDAY school leader has retired after 55 years of working with Christian youngsters.

Audrey Cox was given a Long-Service Certificate from the Methodist Church, a bouquet of flowers and a book of commemorative photos at All Saints Church in Berkhamsted on Sunday.

She began working with Christian youngsters aged just 15, and moved to Berkhamsted with her late husband Alan Cox, a vicar at All Saints Church, 30 years ago.

She led the after-church Sunday school at her Finch Road home until the number of teens going to it grew to more than 50.

It was shifted to the church, but remained hugely popular.

Church-goer Audrey Hope, 77, “She just loves children and they love her in response. She has been a very dedicated Christian leader all her life and has guided a lot of young people along the right path.

“She’s an absolutely splendid and very gentle person and the kids just respond to her. She has been an absolute inspiration and will be surely missed.”

Audrey Cox will continue to go to the church and assist with healing services as well as visiting the house-bound and acting as secretary to one of its women’s groups.
